Laboratory Animal Technician
Job Summary:
Our hospital must have excellent veterinary care along with the best customer service. You will detect animal requirements, conduct diagnostic tests and examinations, provide nursing care such as feeding and general patient care, keep medical equipment and supplies in order, oversee patient checkouts and triage while ensuring accurate medical records are maintained.
Key Responsibilities:
- Veterinarians can also watch an animal’s behavior and body language to gain further insight into their needs. This can allow vet staffs to recognize what individual likes or dislikes may be known about animals that will aid in developing personalized care plans for them.
- In order to ensure patient wellbeing it is necessary for healthcare providers to perform duties like taking vital signs, obtaining samples, giving treatments, vaccines or medications as well as applying bandages/wraps on injuries
- Aide animal inspections & operations by collecting necessary instruments & supplies. escorting patients to designated quarters. assisting with physical manipulation. following veterinarian’s instructions.
- Provide all-encompassing pet care through knowledge in anatomy/physiology/disease processes/drug administration.
- Secure & validate medicines prescribed for the individual.
- Take care of food and water needs of patients. sanitize their living spaces/cages/equipment. observe for any signs of disease
- Carry out medication administration tasks accurately and conscientiously following given protocols for proper record-keeping & secure storage of controlled drugs.
- Ensure a safe, secure, healthy, humane environment by properly sterilizing equipment and wrapping it as needed. sanitizing/disinfecting holding/surgery rooms where animals are cared for or operated on. safely storing sterile supplies until they’re needed then confirming their shelf life before using them according to established protocols while complying with relevant legal requirements
- Healthcare relies heavily upon documenting patients’ conditions/reactions/changes so one should keep accurate up-to-date medical records through regular updates into database
- Speak with pet owner about patient’s health status following vet’s guidelines
- Follow operating instructions/troubleshoot breakdowns/maintain equipment supplies/perform preventive maintenance on machines within your care or call for repairs if necessary.
- Monitor inventory levels. initiate supply orders for needed items. verify and document receipts.
- Stay ahead of the curve by participating in educational opportunities & keeping up with industry through regular reading or professional publications
- Animals will only be released to their owners after proper grooming has been done following given guidelines
- Ability to understand and carry out both verbal and written prompts is a must-have skill set
- Comply with any additional duties as directed by Manager or practice.
If assigned to any of the specific medical fields listed below, perform the following job functions:
Cardiology
- Procure and transport laboratory samples from patient to testing facility
- Patients who have acquired cardiac disorders may need changes made in diet, exercise routine, medication regimen etc so they can manage their condition better.
- Experiment with different calibration techniques/approaches to optimize performance/efficiency of transducers/physiographs in measuring intracardiac/intravascular pressures.
- Identify patient-specific factors which dictate type of pacemaker suitable for use.
Dentistry
- Perform dental cleaning processes, teeth polishing, taking intraoral radiographs as well as nerve blocks etc.
- Prepare and distribute drugs by various routes such as IV infusion, oral ingestion, or skin application
- Do minor flushes and ear cleanings
- Obtain skin scrapings and tape for lab work up
- Arrange skin and ear samples for cytology in a logical manner
- Apply anesthesia and monitor its effect on the patient.
- Place intravenous catheters.
Emergency
- Assist in triage of emergency cases and critical care patients.
- Monitor vitals closely, place tubes, take radiographs.
- Sterilely clean wounds and wrap them with protective casts or bandages.
- Give vaccinations and draw bloods.
- Be prepared to be on-call for ICU cases.
Imaging:
- Work with the veterinarians to provide the best possible care by using different diagnostic imaging techniques such as ultrasound, MRI, digital radiography, CT scans etc.
Integrative:
- Keep logs of diagnoses, treatments, follow-up outcomes etc. accurately reflecting results of treatment. Always practice good hygiene habits like handwashing to prevent spread of viruses/bacteria causing colds/flu/food poisoning etc.
Internal Medicine:
- Several technical procedures performed including supporting anesthesia/monitoring. placing IV catheters. venipuncture. giving IV injections. managing wounds. assisting in drug administration. caring for bandages. assisting in surgeries/routine EMG testing etc.
Neurology:
- Several technical procedures are executed, comprising supporting anesthesia and monitoring, inserting IV catheters, conducting venipuncture, administering IV injections, managing wounds, providing assistance with drug administration, caring for bandages, providing support during surgical procedures, and conducting routine Electromyography (EMG) testing.
Oncology:
- Collaborate with veterinary practitioners in performing pet evaluations, managing diagnostic tests, devising treatment plans, and carrying out medical procedures for pets.

- Supplying and administering varied antineoplastic agents.
- Offer the proprietor comprehensive communication and insight into different malignancies.
Ophthalmology:
- Participate in ocular assessments of animals under the direction of a veterinarian.
- Help practitioners in carrying out diagnostic evaluations, such as Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry, Ocular Ultrasounds, Electroretinogram testing, and others.
Radiology:
- Collaborate with veterinary professionals to improve patient care plans and treatment strategies using advanced diagnostic imaging techniques.
Surgery:
- Offer complete surgical assistance by prepping pets for procedures, scrubbing and shaving the surgical region, serving as a surgical nurse, and managing specialized surgical equipment and supplies.
Qualifications:
- While a high school diploma takes four years to earn, a GED can be achieved in as little as a few months with dedicated study and preparation.
- Having worked for over two years in veterinary care, I am fully capable of providing comprehensive veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care to critically ill and hospitalized animals.
- The requirements for a CVT, LVT, RVT, or LVMT may vary by state, but the role of a veterinary technician is vital in supporting the overall health and well-being of animals.
- A varied arrangement of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be deemed suitable as an alternative.
Position Requirements:
- A comprehensive understanding of the procedures involved in preparing, observing, and recuperating pets following surgery, combined with basic pet care skills, is essential.
- Knowledgeable in the precise techniques for conducting catheter placements, blood draws, emergency medicine procedures, and digital imaging.
- Seek immediate first aid attention after receiving a bite or scratch from an animal.
- Capable of executing approved techniques for patient immobilization.
- Dispense medication and watch sedation practices as directed by the vet.
- Competence to deal with unwell livestock, potentially dangerous elements, sanitation substances, anesthetic vapors, zoonoses, and disagreeable fragrances.
- Utilize appropriate calming techniques, such as heat therapy or soothing music, to help alleviate stress and promote healing in pets.
- Carry out all job responsibilities with a level of maturity and professionalism.
- A flexible schedule and availability for weekend and holiday work are both necessary for job performance.
- This tiresome profession calls for regular body movement, upkeep, and the lifting of bulky items.
- Job duties may require sitting at a desk for a long time or standing and walking for an extended period, depending on the department.
- Those in this role may need to engage in physical maneuvers such as climbing or kneeling.
- The job may involve the intermittent performance of demanding physical tasks, including carrying or lifting animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Take care of phone calls and execute other tasks as required by the healthcare institution.
- Additional tasks and obligations may be assigned by the Manager or practice at their discretion.
