Job Description:

This position will be filled in either Sioux City, IA or Des Moines, IA.

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise.

The engineer, gas integrity, assists in providing engineering services including data management, threat assessment and risk analyses, transmission pipeline integrity assessments, and identification and development of capital and operational improvements to reduce natural gas system risk as required by MidAmerican Energy's Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP) and Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP). Responsibilities include data gathering, review, and integration; identifying high consequence areas and class locations; understanding and identifying pipeline threats and consequences of failure; completing risk analyses; conducting pipeline integrity assessments and evaluating results; developing preventive and mitigative measures to reduce pipeline risk; maintaining strict compliance with all elements of the TIMP, DIMP, and federal and state code, and evaluating and updating elements of integrity management programs as needed. This is the first level in the engineer career path.


Responsibilities:

Assist in providing engineering services and technical project management for various types of transmission pipeline integrity assessments, including external corrosion direct assessment, internal corrosion direct assessment, in-line inspection, and pressure test. Assistance includes pipeline system and station evaluation and modification for in-line inspection tools; development of operational plans to safely launch, track, and receive inspection tools; development of contingency plans; management of various resources during the process; evaluation of assessment results; and development of appropriate mitigative measures, including pipeline repair and replacement plans. Assistance also entails scheduling, design estimates, engineering specifications, drawings, materials procurement, contract development, field inspection, pipeline operation management, cost projections, and tracking. (20%)
Assist in providing engineering services for distribution and transmission pipeline risk analyses, including understanding and identifying threats, sub threats and potential consequences of failure of gas distribution and transmission pipelines. Work includes analysis of pipeline characteristics, performance, environmental, and operational data to appropriately apply significance of threats. Requires completion of pipeline risk analyses reflecting current system and ¿what if¿ scenarios. (15%)
Assist in providing engineering services for natural gas system data management, including data gathering, reviewing for quality, and integrating into company data management and risk analysis systems as required by integrity management programs. Provide queries, reports, and analyses of the data to support the work of the integrity management department and MidAmerican Energy Company objectives. (15%)
Analyze data to identify, define, and track to completion either capital or operational preventive and mitigative measures in response to risk analyses and/or assessment results or to lower pipeline risk. (15%)
Conduct engineering studies and complex investigations; research the root cause of pipeline anomalies, incidents, and material failures and complete similar segment reviews; evaluate annual and periodic performance metrics and determine need for additional measures. (15%)
Participate on teams to develop plans for process improvements, system improvements related to data management, risk algorithm modifications, and records management improvements related to pipeline integrity management programs. Duties include identifying insufficiencies, assisting in plan development, providing technical skills to make or lead change, identifying resource impacts and risk, and presenting proposals. (10%)
Provide code interpretations and gather information about MidAmerican Energy's pipeline system to review and modify elements of the TIMP and DIMP programs. Develop and carry out quality assurance activities for elements of the TIMP and DIMP programs. (5%)
Provide engineering and analysis support to other integrity management programs, including but not limited to the public awareness program (PA), third-party damage prevention program, compliance follow-up (CFO) program, management of change program, and material failure analysis program. (0-5%)
Provide engineering assistance to other departments; facilitate internal training classes for engineers and technicians; participate on company committees/task groups. (0-5%)
Keep informed of industry issues and technical trends and recommend and implement changes to benefit MidAmerican Energy Company's business. Analyze code and provide recommendations. (0-5%)
Provide technical input to assist in development of project planning. (0-5%)
Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.


Qualifications:

This is a multi-level posting.

Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution.

The engineer II position requires at least one year of engineering experience.

The senior engineer position requires at least five years of engineering experience.

The senior engineer II position requires eight years of industry experience and a PE license. If no PE license, must have ten years as a practicing engineer.

The principal engineer position requires fifteen years of industry experience as a practicing engineer, with experience performing highly technical work of a specialized nature.

Ability to achieve accreditation in corrosion control as defined by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.

Motivation to stay abreast of changing requirements and industry best practices.

Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.

Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Working knowledge of federal and state pipeline regulations, including the transmission and distribution integrity rules.

Working knowledge of MidAmerican Energy Company systems that support transmission and distribution integrity efforts, including ArcGIS, Uptime, Synergi, MRP, Leak, WMIS, Oracle, and Delivery Compliance.

Effective organizational skills to meet strict deadlines and to analyze, manage and classify large amounts of data.
