Tesla Palo Alto, California
sensor integration team lead manager design sensor software analysis integration team hardware engineering
March 22, 2023
Tesla
Palo Alto, California
The Role Tesla is seeking a leader for the sensor integration & systems team. The leader of the team is responsible for ensuring sensor performance is successfully achieved when integrated with other subsystems. These sensors include all the ADAS (Autopilot) sensors, as well as other vehicle functionality related to HVAC, Safety, Chassis and other subsystems of the vehicle. This is a very complex role spanning across HW/FW architecture & interface definition, detailed product level executation & validation, fault handling and DFMEA analysis, all the way to field data analysis from engineering and customer fleet. In addition to being technically hands-on, the leader of the team would be expected to make strategic / tactical decisions to maximize productivity of the team balancing the right priorities. Finally, thie leader is expected to instil rigorous design processes and a culture of reviews, as Tesla scales to the next level of growth.

Responsibilities Lead the team towards the design and execution of sensing subsystems through the following:
  • Distill sensor product requirements into constraints and actionable engineering systems design discussions
  • Drive cross-functional sensor design discussions with electrical, software, manufacturing, mechanical design, and service teams
  • Translate sensor design discussions into architecture & design documents in the form of system block diagrams, functional requirements, and performance requirements
  • Define sensor hardware and software interfaces, and work with cross-functional software teams to enable successful feature implementation
  • Prototype early sensor development and bench-top validation to de-risk new technologies
  • Define an integration test plan for sensing hardware products or software features with integration milestones that focus on de-risking product or feature deployment and align with the program timeline
  • Develop data collection and analysis pipeline at all stages of the project
  • Execute initial sensor bring-up and integration testing at the vehicle level to validate system design assumptions and ensure the sensing system is characterized across a host of environments
  • Support system validation teams in developing electrical and software test plans
  • Perform change impact analysis for change requests by summarizing impacted devices, interfaces, and processes in the hardware and software domain
  • Use field data to improve design and performance of the sensor
As the leader of the sensor integration team, one must be able to:
  • Be able to think from first principles and develop new domain expertise very quickly
  • Be able to present risk/performance analysis and recommendations to cross-functional teams including execs
  • Be responsible for overall functional and performance readiness of the sensing system and its features at any point in the product life cycle
  • Understand and highlight impacts of hardware, software, or process changes
  • Understand and debug hardware and software interactions during design, launch, and deployment
  • Understand Tesla's product roadmap and ensure sensor architectures align to satisfy those requirements
  • Manage priorities and support a host of projects simultaneously
  • Instil rigorous design processes and a culture of reviews, as Tesla scales to the next level of growth.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5-10 years of experience in systems design, systems architecture, systems integration, or related field.
  • Strong electrical and embedded systems fundamentals
  • Experience with data visualization and statistical analysis of complex system
  • Hands-on technical experience debugging complex subsystems involving network microprocessors and software-controlled electrical or electromechanical devices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in MATLAB, Python or equivalent tools for modeling and analysis
  • Understanding of hardware & software development and validation process
  • Proven track record of launching high volume products
  • Experience in leading / managing high performance teams delivering complex systems
  • Familiarity with JIRA or similar task/feature tracking systems
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with ADAS technologies/architectures and sensors such as GNSS, IMU, radar, and ultrasonics
    • Experience working with & debugging C/C++ systems or similar real-time systems
    • Experience with version control tools such as Git, SVN or equivalents
    • Experience with sensor design & characterization
    • Experience with ethernet and/or CAN tools such as Vector CANape
    • Experience in failure analysis, HARAs, and fault trees
    • Experience with high volume manufacturing
    • Experience with embedded systems
